Many suppliers are now offering 100% Green Energy tariffs, historically Green Energy tariffs have been more expensive than the normal fossil fuel tariffs, making them less accessible. However, we now at a stage where Green Energy tariffs are often no more expensive than alternative tariffs. Not only can it make financial sense to opt for a Green tariff, it also provides benefits to businesses in the form of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Corporate Social Responsibility is defined as looking at a company’s impact on the world and coming up with a plan to ensure that they are as environmentally and socially responsible as possible. One benefit of CSR is improvement to public perception and reputation. A recent study by Orsted revealed that 3 out of 4 respondents were more inclined to choose a business that uses renewable energy. In fact, more than 20% were willing to pay a premium for products from a business using 100% Green Energy. Other benefits of CSR include attracting investors, saving money, boosting staff engagement and encouraging media coverage within your community.
Green electricity is electricity produced from sources which do not have a negative impact on the environment. The cleanest energy sources are those which utilise the natural energy flows of the Earth. These are usually known as renewable energy sources, because they will never run out. The most popular renewable energy sources are currently wind, solar and water.
Green gas (or biomethane) is a type of gas created from biodegradable material. It can be used in the same way as traditional fossil fuel gas. Anaerobic Digestion is a proven technology that is already very common across Britain. There are more than 500 plants operating around the country. These plants mostly use biodegradable material. This includes: animal manure, food waste, agricultural crops, crop bi-products, or human sewage. The biogas is usually burned to create electricity. There are now over 80 Anaerobic Digestion plants operating around Britain that purify their biogas into biomethane to then inject it into the National Grid.
