Wow! what a year 2022 has been.
Due to a perfect storm, the energy crisis has soared to new hights. The War in Ukraine, restrictions of gas and electricity supply into the UK Market, sanctions on Russian Gas and the EU impact from Brexit have caused energy prices to reach unprecedented levels, completely unsustainable for businesses.
Peoples lives and businesses are being affected more than ever with the energy crisis. The government stepped in with the promise of price caps for homes and businesses but then they did a complete U-turn and offered discounts as form of the Business Energy Relief Scheme, this has been seen as very little help, delivered much too late for many businesses.
Recently we have seen prices fall, from the Peak of the crisis in September where prices were around £650 p/MWh average to current averages of around £270 p/MWh. However, this fall hasn’t really shown a discount in prices that we would have naturally expected. Energy suppliers are listing soaring profits, so the natural assumption is that energy suppliers are profiteering through these tough times.
Prices are at least falling so we would hope that once suppliers feel comfortable, we should hopefully see a price war as clients look to secure contracts next year. ( fingers crossed ).
